Yameen ordered to pay MVR 53m in 6 months

Yameen was given six months by the criminal court to pay the amount.

Criminal Court on Sunday ordered former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to pay USD 3.4 million (MVR 53 million) to the state within six months, as part of his conviction for bribery and money laundering.

Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison on December 28 for accepting bribes in the lease of V. Aarah island through MMPRC and laundering money from the proceeds of the transaction.

The reasons cited by the trial court as the reasons for ordering the state to withdraw funds are as follows:

  • Accepting USD 1 million in bribes in a lease deal 

  • After the bribe money was deposited in Yameen's accounts in various banks, a total of USD 3.4 million (MVR 53 million) was deposited in another MIB account along with the additional money in those accounts and invested over a period of 36 months

  • Yameen was found guilty of money laundering was ordered to pay the state USD 2.4 million for the money laundered and USD 2.4 million from the investment of the money

Yameen was ordered to pay to the state:

  • USD 3.4 million (MVR 53 million)

  • Profit earned by investing the money 

Yameen was given six months by the criminal court to pay the amount.

Yameen's 11-year prison sentence was challenged in the High Court last week.
