Criminal Court will stop using the existing building and shift it to the building that once housed the Covid-19 facility in Hulhumale, Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) announced Monday.

The DJA has decided to stop using the four-storey building, which is currently functioning as the court, as it is badly damaged and dilapidated.

The commission took the decision as the level at which the building was deteriorating did not fit for the safety standards of judges and staff.

In addition to stopping the use of the existing building, the trial court proceedings will be conducted online. The employees will then work from home on shift duty basis.

"To resolve the issue of criminal court building, the government has now earmarked the building that houses the former Covid-19 facility in Hulhumale for the operation of the criminal court," the DJA said in a statement.

"And we would like to inform you that the process of relocating to the building is in progress."

DJA, however, did not say how long it would take to shift to the new building or how long the rules governing the court's work will be changed until it is shifted to the new building.

The current building where the criminal court operates was earlier the STO’s head office. It was one of the first four-storey buildings in the country.
