Nizam killed Liton by pushing him into sea; charges of murder

The PG office filed three chargesheets against Nizam in the case on Thursday.

Prosecutor General's Office revealed on Friday that the missing Bangladeshi man from the boat ‘Hedheykuri’, Mohamed Liton, was killed by the captain of the boat, Mohamed Nizam, by pushing him into the sea in the area near K.Galufalhu.

PG said Nizam has now been charged with culpable homicide.

  • On the night of December 28, the police launched a manhunt for the ‘Hedheykuri’ oil vessel, as well as Nizam and Liton, who went missing 

  • The boat was spotted near Hulhule, but there was no one on it

  • While the search for Liton and Nizam was announced, Nizam was spotted by the public while he was in the capital

  • Liton’s whereabouts remained unknown, and his body was yet to be recovered

  • The police had earlier said Nizam had been taken into police custody and an investigation had been launched against him in connection with the murder of Liton

The PG office filed three chargesheets against Nizam in the case on Thursday. The charges are as follows:

  • Charged with culpable homicide amounting to murder - 10 years in jail or death penalty

  • Charges of robbery – one year, seven months and six days in jail

  • Charges of dealing with diamorphine - 15 years in jail and fine ranging from MVR 25,000 to MVR 500,000

The PG Office said that during investigation, it was found that Mohammad Nizam had killed Mohammed Liton after stealing MVR 50,000 from him. PG informed according to police:

  • Liton was caught unawares and killed by pushing him into the sea near the area K. Galufalhu

  • This happened between 7 pm and 8.30 pm on December 28, 2022

  • Nizam stole over MVR 51,000 cash from Liton that was in Hedheykuri boat

Nizam was charged with drug trafficking, according to the PG office. Police raided a room in the north half of M.A. Shaadheevila and found diamorphine weighing 3.2 grams. It is alleged that he bought the drugs from the money he had stolen from the boat.
