A man has confessed to the police how he stabbed his older brother to death with a pair of scissors in Addu, police said on Sunday.
The investigation is now nearing completion and police are preparing to send the case to the Prosecutor General's Office (PG) for prosecution this week.
Ahmed Shuaib, 27, of Bluestar/MaradhooFeydhoo, was killed in a fight between two brothers on May 30. Shuaib's brother, Hussain Mawaz, 25, of Bluestar/MaradhooFeydhoo, was arrested on charges of killing him.
The South Region Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shameem, told Atoll Times on Sunday that the investigation into Shuaib's murder has been completed.
"He [Mawaz] has been cooperating with the police since the first day. He has told the investigation what happened," Shameem said.
Shameem said some statements are being taken. He said discussions have now begun with the PG office to prosecute Mawaz.
“We are working to send the case to the police this week,” Shameem said.
Shameem did not disclose any further details. He said police would issue a statement on the matter soon.
Atoll Times has learned that Mawaz was intoxicated when he attacked his brother. After doing so, police arrested him when he appeared at the police station himself the next day.
According to some islanders:
-
Mawaz got angry when his brother sold his phone to buy drugs
-
On learning about this, he murdered his brother by stabbing him in the chest with a pair of scissors
-
Shuaib collapsed outside their house after he ran out with the injuries
The brother got angry because Mawaz stole the drugs he was peddling. However, that is not ascertained yet.
