Atoll Times has confirmed that the man who stabbed his brother to death with a pair of scissors in Addu last week was intoxicated when he committed the murder.

Ahmed Shuaib, 27, Bluestar/Maradhoo-Feydhoo, died after he was stabbed by his younger brother in Maradhoo on Wednesday night. Shuaib's brother, Hussain Mawaz, 25, surrendered himself to the police the next day.

He was arrested and produced before a local court, which remanded him in custody until the end of his trial.

A police source confirmed to Atoll Times that Mawaz was in an inebriated state when the two brothers had fought.

"We believe he was highly intoxicated. He had committed the murder without knowing what he was doing," said a police officer privy to the development.

"Having done this to his own sibling, he is deeply affected now. He is unable to speak properly in the court."

According to islanders and other sources:

  • Mawaz got angry when his brother sold his phone to buy drugs

  • On learning about this, he murdered his brother by stabbing him in the chest with a pair of scissors

  • Shuaib collapsed outside their house after he ran out with the injuries

  • Both the brothers have a criminal record of drug peddling

Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shameem, commander of the police's southern region which includes Addu, told Atoll Times on Sunday that Mawaz was fully cooperating with the investigation.

"He didn't deny committing the crime. He is cooperating with the police to a great extent," Shameem said in response to a question on whether Mawaz had confessed to the crime.

Shameem refused to divulge further details as the investigation was still underway.
