More than a month and a half after the murder of Naeema Moosa, residents of N. Manadhoo were worried that no arrests had been made. However, it has been a while since the police's eyes had been fixed upon a young man in the island.
While the police had their suspicions over 23-year-old Ahuzam Abdul Shakoor, who has police records of drug abuse and gang violence, there was not enough evidence to arrest him in connection to Naeema's murder. That's why the police decided to tail him.
As per sources:
-
The police started suspecting Ahuzam after inspecting his behaviour from the CCTV footage of the night Naeema was murdered, taken from various places in the island, showing his movements
-
A few days later, when he was summoned to the island's police station for questioning in connection with the murder, police suspicions were heightened by his conduct
-
However, the police at that time did not have enough evidence to arrest him over murder charges.
The police finally hit jackpot five days ago.
Ahuzam, who was being tailed in connection with Naeema's murder, was caught red handed with drugs. Police recovered 56 grams of narcotics from him.
Ahuzam was first remanded for three days. However, the island's magistrate court on Friday extended his remand for another 14 days as he was deemed a threat to the society.
As per sources:
-
On the third day of his detention, Ahuzam confessed to killing Naeema
-
The others involved in the murder and the location of the weapons used to kill Naeema were also disclosed
-
He also narrated how and where they hid their clothes
According to the police, the clothes were found in a pit where it had been burnt and buried.
Till Friday afternoon, the police did not arrest anyone else in the case. However, a 20-year-old young man was arrested on Friday night.
On the night of Naeema's murder, they were allegedly driving around in the island in a car for a long time. The police replayed the way they were in the car that night. The car is now in police custody.
Now the big question is, why was an elderly woman who lived alone, murdered by these young men? For the sake of money? Or something else related to Naeema?
Further details could be given only after the investigation is completed, police said.
