Former Attorney General Dr. Mohammad Munawwar on Saturday launched his campaign for the upcoming presidential election.
Addu-born Munawwar tweeted a logo with a picture of the white tern bird locally known as Dhondheeni, and native to Addu.
He also opened a campaign office in Male.
Munawwar started his presidential campaign after having criticised the government in the past. Munawwar had also campaigned for MDP President Mohamed Nasheed, who had come out against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the party's primary held in January.
Munawwar, who had previously served as MDP president, has entered the presidential race and among those who have so far announced that they will contest the presidential election are:
-
President Solih, who won the MDP’s presidential ticket
-
MNP leader Mohamed Nazim
-
Former home minister Umar Naseer
Former president Abdulla Yameen was given the opposition party's presidential ticket, but he remains in jail, sentenced for 11 years. Therefore, the question whether he can contest the elections has risen.
Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim, who is part of the ruling coalition, is yet to take a decision on contesting the elections.
