Government on Thursday said it will send a bill to the parliament to amend the General Election Act to make it possible for people with visual disabilities to vote without the help of anyone else.

Presidential spokesperson Miuvaan Mohamed made the remarks while speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office Thursday afternoon to brief the media on government's work.

The main amendment in the bill, according to Miuvan:

  • Those who wish to vote on their own will have to use a plastic device specially designed to cast their votes

More details about the bill will be available after it is sent to the parliament, Miuvan said.

The Blind and Visually Impaired Society of Maldives urged authorities earlier this month to use the device mentioned in the bill to enable people to vote on their own in elections.

At a press conference held at the parliament secretariat, the organisation also showed an example of a tool that can be used to cast votes.

  • The same size as the ballot paper; a sample prepared from hard material

  • The ballot paper has a positive mark on the name of the candidates.

  • The aim is for visually impaired people to put their hands on it and mark the number of the desired candidate
