A motion has been moved in the parliament on Wednesday demanding that manager-level positions in the tourism sector be reserved exclusively for Maldivians.

Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir's resolution, which had its first reading in Wednesday's parliament sitting, said that the posts of chief accountant, resort manager and HR manager should be reserved exclusively for locals.

In the resolution, Jabir said:

  • In nearly 80% of islands, resort managers are foreigners

  • Accounts manager or chief accountant in 95% of the resorts is a foreigner

  • HR managers in 70% of resorts are also expatriates

Noting that Maldivians are world-renowned for their intellectual capacity, Jabir said he does not believe that there could be a bigger problem than to think that Maldivians are not qualified for top positions in the tourism industry.

Jabir sought the views of fellow lawmakers on how best to resolve the issue.
