6 arrested in Malé drug operation
Following the arrests, police carried out searches at two locations in Malé under court orders. Drugs were found during the searches.
Maldives Police Service has arrested six Maldivian nationals in Malé in connection with a narcotics case.
Police stated that the suspects were arrested last Wednesday during a joint operation conducted by Counter-Narcotics Intelligence and Drug Enforcement.
Following the arrests, police carried out searches at two locations in Malé under court orders. Drugs were found during the searches. The quantity has not been disclosed.
The suspects have been identified as Mohamed Mahir (36) of Haneeseason, Dh. Meedhoo; Ali Eeshad (32) of Sosun, S. Hulhudhoo; Ahil Ali (23) of G. Kandhumage-aage, Malé; Rikzu Adam (23) of Five Rose, GDh. Thinadhoo; Mohamed Suhaan Ahmed (39) of Dhunthari, Lh. Hinnavaru; and Abdul Majid Ibrahim (38) of Matharesmaage, L. Gan.
The court has ordered a five-day remand for Rikzu Adam and a 12-day remand for Ahil Ali. The remaining four suspects have been remanded for 15 days.
According to court documents, Rikzu Adam was arrested after drugs were found in plain view during a search of a room at Town Stay Guesthouse. A passport-sized photograph of the suspect was also recovered from the room. Police also seized Maldivian currency and items used for packaging and distribution.
Court orders for the other suspects state that drugs were found in plain view on a bed and inside a bed headboard in the room they were occupying. A bottle suspected to contain alcohol was also found in a refrigerator in the same room.
The court documents further state that preliminary urine tests for all suspects returned positive results for Opiates, Benzodiazepines, Amphetamines, Cathinone and Dextromethorphan.
