Four individuals arrested under “Operation Alimagu” on suspicion of drug trafficking have been released following a decision by the Prosecutor General’s Office citing insufficient evidence.

The suspects had been taken into custody in January in Malé and Gaafu Alifu Atoll and were held pending the outcome of investigations.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the decision was made after the expiry of the 90-day period required to file charges.

Public Prosecutor and spokesperson Ahmed Shafeeu said that a review of the evidence gathered during the investigation did not support charges for a major criminal offence.

“After reviewing the material submitted by the police, it was determined that there is insufficient evidence and testimony to press charges for a major criminal offence,” he said.

The four individuals, all residents of Ga. Villingili, are:

  • Ahmed Anaam Ibrahim, 30

  • Shaffah Latheef, 28

  • Ahmed Madheeh, 33

  • Noorunnizam, 35

Following the decision, police were instructed to release them from detention.

Shafeeu said that charges related to cannabis use have been filed against three of the individuals—Anaam, Shaffah, and Madheeh.

In the case of Noorunnizam, the matter has been referred back to the police due to lack of evidence to proceed with charges.

The Prosecutor General’s Office also instructed the police to continue the investigation.
