The Maldives Police Service identified the suspects as Alya Sharsa Naseer, 25, of G. Mutheegeage, and Aminath Roona, 29, of Bijilee-ufa, K. Thulusdhoo.

Police said the arrests followed an investigation into the importation, distribution and trafficking of more than one kilogram of controlled substances brought into the country by air.

Alya was detained at Velana International Airport on Friday night by Maldives Customs Service officers and later handed over to the police. Roona was arrested in Hulhumalé on the same night during an operation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Department and Counter-Narcotics Intelligence.
