Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) said on Tuesday that bin liners or dustbin bags will be sold at prices between MVR 35 and MVR 165 based on the size.
A tax of MVR 2 per plastic bag came into effect last week under the Waste Management Bill, which was passed by parliament and ratified by the president in November.
With this, the price of bags sold at wholesale shops has increased manifold and people are worried about the increase in the cost of waste disposal.
WAMCO announced on Sunday that it will start selling bags from Thursday onwards and their bags will not be taxed at MVR 2 per bag.
The prices announced in a social media post on Tuesday are:
-
Large - a bundle of 100 bags for MVR 35
-
XX Large - a bundle of 100 bags for MVR 165
-
XXX Large - A 50-bag bundle for MVR 165
WAMCO had earlier said that it will sell bags from its front offices set up in Male, Hulhumale and Villimale.
The bags have been advised to be used only for dumping of garbage.
