In a bid to address the issue of multi-fold rise in prices of plastic bags used for dumping of garbage, state-run Waste Management Company (WAMCO) began selling bin liners on Thursday.
Under an amendment to the Waste Management Act in November, a fee of MVR 2 per plastic bag is being levied from April 18. However, under the law, bin liners sold by waste management service providers will not be subject to the MVR 2 tax.
With the change in the law, taxes have been levied on bags, both while selling the bags itself and during shopping; even the bag bundles are taxed separately, through the route of MVR 2 per bag.
When the law first came into force, there was also public outcry over WAMCO's failure to start selling bags.
WAMCO has started selling bags from its front offices at its waste transfer stations in Male, Hulhumale and Villimale.
Apart from this, pre-order and doorstep delivery service has also been introduced.
