Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has decided to sell garbage collection bags from Thursday.
The Waste Management Bill, which was passed by parliament in November, became a law and taxing plastic bags had begun from last week.
With this change, there is now a tax on plastic bags, both for buying bags and bags involved in shopping. With this, the price of bags sold at wholesale shops has increased manifold and people are worried about the increase in the cost of waste disposal.
WAMCO announced on Sunday that it will start selling bags from Thursday onwards and their bags will not be taxed at MVR 2 per bag. The price of the bags is yet to be finalised and it will be announced later, WAMCO said in a statement.
WAMCO adds:
-
The company sells three sizes of black and green bags: 11, 17, 18, 27, 36, and 48-inch bags
-
The company will provide bags from their front offices set up in Male, Hulhumale and Villimale
-
The bags have been advised to be used only for dumping of garbage
"So, we request you to seal the perishables waste in the green bag and other waste in the black bag," WAMCO said in a statement.
