The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to make it mandatory for all candidates contesting in the upcoming local council elections to complete a special training programme.
The decision was made during the party’s National Assembly meeting held on Wednesday, where a proposal submitted by the committee tasked with planning for the elections was discussed and unanimously endorsed.
According to the approved proposal, the training will be organised by the party’s academy. It will cover the MDP’s core policies and the decentralisation framework.
The party has decided that all candidates taking part in the primaries must complete the training programme as a prerequisite for standing in the election.
The MDP said the objective of the training is to ensure that candidates are familiar with the party’s values and understand the responsibilities of council service under the decentralised governance system.
