Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) on Saturday announced that garbage collection fees will no longer be included in electricity bills for households in the islands of the Maldives.
The policy of combining the waste disposal fee with electricity bills was introduced in April last year. WAMCO stated that the decision to reverse the practice was made following the advice of President Mohamed Muizzu.
Under the new system:
-
Waste disposal services will only be billed to individuals who register for the service.
-
Payments can be made at WAMCO offices in the islands or through WAMCO's online payment platform, 'Avaspay.'
Previously, the Environment Ministry had justified the integration of waste management fees with electricity bills as a solution to address non-payment issues for waste disposal services.
Non-payment of WAMCO service fees had caused several operational challenges, including:
-
Strains on the company’s cash flow, limiting its ability to repair and maintain equipment used for waste management.
-
Increased costs and difficulties in ensuring regular waste collection and disposal services.
WAMCO has urged individuals to register for services and comply with the revised payment procedures to ensure effective waste management.
