Male City Council has decided to demolish the existing local market to develop a state-of-the-art fish market and local market building on the same premises. With this, two parking zones will be vacated to run a temporary market until the project is completed.

A press conference was held at the Male City Council's office on Thursday to update on the work being done by the city council.

During the meeting, Mayor of Male Mohamed Muizz said that the decision to modernise the fish market means constructing a four-storey building to provide various services from there, along with the local market. He said the fish market will be at the ground floor of the building, which is going to be developed where the local market is now.

The modern market building will have:

  • Fish market on the ground floor

  • The first floor, second floor and third floors will operate the local market and the travellers market

  • Fourth floor will be allotted for running restaurants/cafes

Muizz said the current local market will be vacated for the construction of the modern market only after temporary markets are built elsewhere. Two existing parking zones will be reserved to run the temporary market, he said. The zones are:

  • Parking zone in front of the High Court

  • Another zone in the market area (the exact area is yet to be set, Muizz said)

In the makeshift market, Muizz said that a slot would be given to each stall so that the current business in the local market does not stop.

Muizz also said that the existing local market would be shifted to the temporary market and the local market would be demolished as soon as it was completed.

The mayor also said that he believed that the two parking zones vacated to run the temporary market would lead to parking problems. He, however, said that if the temporary local market is set up in Maafannu corner or away from the market, traders will face more problems and hence they have no option but to take out two parking zones for the market.
