Transport ministry on Monday expressed concerns on Monday over the continued crossings at the channel between Male–Villimale and Villimale–Gulhifalhu which had been closed off for the construction of the Thilamale bridge, and warned that licenses of captains will be suspended for a month if they continue to cross the work-in-progress zone.

The ministry said in a notification that the area has been closed since August 15 for the construction of the bridge and it has been announced to the public.

The ministry says it has been receiving complaints that several vessels are using the channel.

  • It is not safe to ride through the channel during the time of ongoing bridge work

  • The ministry reminded that the area has been cordoned off

The ministry said that the Sinamale Bridge channel is now open to vessels coming from the southern atolls to travel through.

The ministry reminded that:

  • As per the regulations governing the captain licence of vehicles operating in the country's territorial waters, if a person enters a prohibited area, their licence will be withheld for a period of one month
