The Family Court on Monday said there have been a number of cases filed by parents seeking protection from being victimised by their children.

On the occasion of International Family Day observed on Monday, Family Court Chief Judge Ibrahim Mahir spoke about the new findings.

The judge observed that most cases of domestic violence are filed in the court by couples or divorcees. Lately, there has been an increase in cases of parents seeking protection from their own children, he said.

"Even though children are supposed to love, care, protect and bring peace to their parents, in some families, the pain the children are inflicting on parents’ hearts is reflected in the tears they shed in court," the judge said.

What lends credence to the chief justice's argument is the data on domestic violence cases released by the gender ministry every month.

In the first three months of this year, the gender ministry received the highest number of cases of physical violence. However, since elderly people in the country live with their families, such cases filed were listed under the elderly care category.

In the last three months:

  • 18 cases have been registered for senior citizens in need of care

  • In January, seven cases were filed

  • Four cases were filed in February

  • In March too, seven cases were filed

According to police and gender ministry records, parents are most commonly assaulted under intoxication. In the last two-three years, there have been several cases of parents being beaten up and threatened for not providing money to buy intoxicants or during their inebriated states.

Cases of attack with objects such as knives and chairs have also been registered with the police.
