A social media post by Mom's Aid NGO on Sunday showing the plight of a single mother and her two children after they have been abandoned on the streets has triggered a public outcry as to why action has not been taken against the man who committed domestic violence.

Mom's Aid posted on its social media accounts that a woman who stayed in her ex-husband's house with their two children was thrown out of the house and on to the street.

According to the victim, Mom's Aid:

  • Even during the pandemic lockdown, they had been thrown out onto the streets

  • Several times, she was thrown out of the house, beaten up and thrown off the stairs even; she was threatened with a knife and attacked with it even

  • On several occasions, water and electricity had been cut off from the house and their lives were disrupted in various other ways

  • The last time she was thrown out of the house was during last month, and she was not giver her children's’ school uniforms or stationery; it's been a month since she couldn't send the children to school

Gender ministry and police have been investigating the case for a long time, the NGO said. A court has passed an order against the alleged atrocities committed by her ex-husband, but the order had not been complied with.

When a family was subjected to such atrocities, questions were raised as to what the authorities had done and why action was not taken against the accused man.

"The gender ministry, human rights and the police are always there to defend the perpetrators," commented one user in the post.

Alleging that the gender ministry and the police did not act properly in the case, a person familiar with the development said that two minor children, aged seven and four, should not have been subjected to even witness such situations.

"Two innocent little children are not getting any legal protection in parental cases," said one of the commenters.

The woman had gone home on the instructions of the gender ministry to locate the important documents of the children, the complainant said. However, without giving the required documents, the man dumped stuff onto the road.

"The situation in the country. They wont do nothing unless a catastrophe goes down, that too for five days," wrote another.

The gender ministry in a message to the media said that after the complaint was filed, officials went to her current place of residence and had provided necessary assistance.

"The ministry has facilitated the legal protection awarded to the victim of domestic violence under the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act. Efforts have been made on several occasions to ensure legal rights," the message read.

On being questioned by Atoll Times, the police said on Monday that a case of a woman being forced out of a house in the city with two children under the age of 18 years was reported to them on March 17.

"We have done the necessary work with the concerned authorities in this regard", the police said, noting that further investigation is underway.

When repeatedly asked if the man accused of domestic violence had been arrested or summoned for questioning, the police gave the same answer.

Within three hours of opening up to help the affected families, the mother and two children had received the necessary money and supplies, Mom's Aid said on Sunday evening. The organisation has stopped accepting money for the time being.

Mom's Aid said it would use the aid proceeds:

  • To rent a place where the family will live

  • To pay advance to the place

  • To buy furniture

  • To get supplies for children

  • For food
