Opposition PNC Vice President and Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef said on Tuesday that parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed is a strong leader in the path of democracy and his removal from the speakership is something that should not be done at all.

MDP's parliamentary group on Tuesday passed a motion to file a no-confidence motion against Nasheed, alleging that his conduct of the parliament violates the rules of procedure and that MDP was "out of patience".

Adam Shareef tweeted in support of Nasheed saying that he has ensured minority voices are heard in the parliament. It is the essence of democracy, he added.

Shareef also accused the government of trying to destabilise the parliament.

When asked by Atoll Times if the PPM-PNC would support Nasheed's removal, Shareef said no decision has been taken in the parliamentary group so far. He, however, made it clear that he was not in favour of Nasheed's removal.

"We believe that President Nasheed is one of the most influential figures in the country's politics. He was instrumental in bringing democracy to the country," He said.
