Elections Commission (EC) on Tuesday denied allegations that a list of signatories to The Democrats, led by parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed, was leaked from the commission.

The Democrats filed for registration on Thursday with 3,560 membership forms. Those leading the movement alleged that the list has since been leaked from the EC and those on the list had been threatened by government functionaries.

Refuting the allegations in a statement issued on Tuesday evening after the commission looked into the alleged leak, the EC said that no such incident had taken place.

"At a time like this, we appeal to the public not to spread any rumours to undermine the trust of the public in the  commission, its members and staff," the statement read, noting that the EC is gearing up for the upcoming presidential elections in September.

The President's Office has denied The Democrats' allegation that the government is threatening those who signed up to the party.
