President declines to reappoint Zahir to EC for second term
The President forwarded the name of Riffath Abdullah of Kinara, M. Maavah, to Parliament for approval.

President Mohamed Muizzu has submitted an alternative name to Parliament for approval to replace Elections Commission (EC) member Dr Mohamed Zahir, whose five-year term is due to expire on the 21st of this month, despite Zahir applying for a second term.
Zahir was appointed to the EC in February 2021 during the previous administration. His term is scheduled to end after completing five years in office.
The President’s letter was read out during the parliamentary sitting held Tuesday.
According to the letter, several candidates were considered for the post. The President forwarded the name of Riffath Abdullah of Kinara, M. Maavah, to Parliament for approval.
Although Riffath Abdulla’s background was not detailed in the letter, Atoll Times has learned that he served in the legal department of the Elections Commission between 2017 and 2019 and held the post of Deputy Director.
The letter also listed other candidates who were considered for the position. They are Aminath Shaadhia of M. Pisthaage, Mohamed Aneel of Meyga, Gdh. Thinadhoo, and Mohamed Aslam of National House, Gdh. Gahdhoo.
