Single-round election will be open for public debate, president says
When asked about the government’s position ahead of Saturday’s consultation vote, the President said the amendment remains under review.
President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the presidential election could be held in one round, with the introduction of a preferential voting system.
He made the remarks in response to a question from Dhauru at a press conference Minday.
One of the votes in Saturday’s election will determine whether the public supports shortening the current parliamentary term and holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.
According to details shared at the press conference:
-
Two years ago, the President indicated plans to remove the second round of the presidential election in order to reduce costs
-
The proposal includes selecting a leader through a preferential voting system similar to that used in Sri Lanka
-
The President has stated that discussions on the amendments are ongoing
When asked about the government’s position ahead of Saturday’s consultation vote, the President said the amendment remains under review.
“I thought it was the first thing I said at the 2024 November 11 session. That is what I think, I prefer. However, I have left it for public debate. A preferential voting system, a one-round president because I believe it should be discussed,” he said.
He added that any move towards a preferential voting system would depend on public support for holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day. Discussions are ongoing at legal and technical levels.
“I do not want it to be something that people will regret in the years to come, or a weakness in our system. I want it to be transparent and done properly,” he said.
“It will be decided after further discussion among the people.”
The government has faced criticism from the opposition over the pace of the proposed changes. Opposition figures have also raised concerns about holding such votes during Ramadan, stating it limits their ability to campaign.
When asked why the amendment had not been opened for wider discussion, the President did not give a direct response.
The President said the public would support holding both elections on the same day and repeated the advantages he sees in the proposal.
