Abdulla Luthufy, the mastermind behind the November 3 attacks, has completed serving his 25-year prison sentence and is less than seven months away from being released.
A top official from the Maldives Correctional Service confirmed that Luthufy had completed his 25-year prison sentence, but is still in prison as he is now serving a separate seven-month and 18-day sentence for his 2010 escape.
Corrections spokesperson Yusreen Ahmed also confirmed to Atoll Times that Luthufy is still in prison.
Nineteen Maldivians lost their lives in the November 3, 1988 attack carried out by a group of Maldivians in collaboration with the Sri Lankan People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) to overthrow the Maldivian government.

However, the sentence was later commuted to 25 years in prison
Luthufy escaped in 2010 while he was sent abroad for medical treatment. After nine years on the run, he surrendered himself at the Maldivian embassy in Sri Lanka on 1 May 2019.
The government then brought him back to Maldives, charged him with escape and sentenced him. Luthufy will now be released after serving his seven-month sentence.
