Male Prison, the prison adjacent to the new building of Dharumavantha School, was evacuated and closed on Saturday.
The Male Prison was ordered to be vacated last year due to the alarming effects it was having on the children that attended school in the adjacent Dharumavantha School, which is also in front of Villa College.
The prison has been vacated and closed, the Corrections Department said in a statement on Saturday.

The prison was closed because it was adversely affecting students studying at the adjacent Dharumavantha School

The prison will continue to provide services to the public at the counter until the 12th of this month
Assistant Commissioner of Corrections Mohammed Asif said last month that the evacuation of the prison will be completed by the start of the second term.
He said at the time that the prisoners were being vacated and transferred by making changes at both Maafushi Prison and Asseyri prison to accommodate those being transferred from Male Prison.
Asif said that some changes have been made to the Annex One building of the corrections to accommodate prisoners brought to Male for court and medical treatment.
The previous government had also said that the Male prison would be vacated. The then Commissioner of Corrections, Ahmed Mohammed, said in March of that year that the prison would be emptied from 2022 onwards. However, this did not happen up to the change of government.
