Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) prison officers on Tuesday officially started using body-worn cameras after completing the testing phase.
Frontline officers in prisons began using bodycams in August last year on a trial basis.
Corrections says:
-
51 cameras will be used at the beginning; all future officers who have to deal with prisoners will use this camera
-
The camera will be used at all times when dealing with prisoners during official working hours
-
The bodycam will be able to live stream various operations and high security prisoners being transported from one place to another
-
Recordings will be protected and maintained so that it cannot be edited
Corrections on Tuesday said that with the bodycam, the service will be able to address the concerns in the safety of officers and prisoners. At the same time, having video and audio recordings will make it easier for internal and external investigators to identify the prison situation and investigate a possible incident, it said.
This will play an important role in ensuring the safety of inmates and prison officers, the corrections said.
The corrections said a procedure for using the cameras has been developed and officers have been trained on the procedure.
