10 MPs get free land: 5 from MDP, 4 from Democrats, 1 from MNP

According to the list, of the MPs representing the 15 administrative constituencies in Male, eight will directly receive land.

Ten lawmakers are set to receive free land from the Male region, according to the provision list of land beneficiaries under the government's Binveriya scheme announced on Monday.

The provisional list of land recipients was publicised at a press conference held at the President's Office on Monday.

According to the list, of the MPs representing the 15 administrative constituencies in Male, eight will directly receive land. They are: 

  • Henveiru North MP Ibrahim Muizz (MDP) – 69.16 marks; single application

  • Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef (The Democrats) – 100.26 marks; everyone included in the seven-member application were deemed eligible 

  • North Machangolhi MP Mohamed Rasheed (The Democrats) – 91.07 marks; everyone included in the six-member application were deemed eligible

  • South Machangolhi MP Ahmed Haitham (MDP) – 79.69 marks; everyone included in the three-member application were deemed eligible

  • Maafannu North MP Imtiyaz Fahmy (The Democrats) – 76.18 marks; all but two included in the six-member application were deemed eligible

  • Maafannu West MP Mohamed Falah (MDP) – One of the two applicants did not meet the criteria, but since one qualified, he will also receive land

  • Maafannu Central MP Ibrahim Rasheed (The Democrats) – 72 marks; everyone included in the three-member application were deemed eligible

  • Villimale MP Ahmed Usham (MNP) – 82.72 marks; everyone included in the five-member application were deemed eligible

In addition, the list includes:

  • Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam and her husband, Kinbidhoo MP Mohamed Nashiz (MDP) – 71.59 marks; three people -- the couple and their daughter -- were included in the application and they all were deemed eligible  

According to the information shared by the housing ministry at the press conference: 

  • The list of 5,000 eligible forms being gazetted on Monday will be 'live' or will be updated regularly; all those eligible will get land

  • Applicants can understand why they did not qualify from the dedicated Gedhoruveriya portal

  • 12,794 applications met the eligibility criteria; 19,857 people

  • Even if one person in the form does not meet the criteria, the person who does not meet the eligibility criteria will be excluded and the application will be deemed eligible

The Binnveriya scheme is designed to allot land from Male for natives of the capital city. The Gedhoruveriya scheme is meant to provide flats to natives as well as residents who have lived in Male for over 15 years.

Earlier, the housing ministry had said that around 36,000 applications had been received for the two schemes:

  •  For land – 15,164 applicants

  • Three-bedroom apartments - 14,489 applicants

  • Two-bedroom apartments - 6,208 applicants

  • Total - 35,861 applicants

Under the Binveriya scheme, the land will be allotted by reclaiming Hulhumale and Gulhifalhu as well as Giraavaru lagoon. The total size of the land earmarked for allotment under the scheme is 3.7 million sqft. According to the ministry, the number of plots to be allotted will be decided based on the size of the plot to be allotted to individual applications selected for allotment.

  • The minimum size of the plot available for an application is 1,250 sqft

  • For joint applications, each additional participant will be assigned an additional 400 sqft  

  • If more than seven people participate in the joint application, the total size will be capped at 4,000 sqft
