President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Saturday that he is contesting the September 9 presidential election with the support of more than 77,000 people.
President Solih made the remarks during a motivational speech organised for the MDP campaign team at Izzuddin School.
“When President [Abdulla] Yameen came to power in 2013, the PPM membership was about 40,000. He got about 98,000 votes," President Solih said, referring to the 2013 presidential election.
The president said he will be contesting the upcoming elections with the largest coalition, with more than 77,000 people with him.
"If we all work together, this is a one-round election," he said.
The president was referring to the official membership numbers of MDP and its coalition parties, Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam’s MDA and home minister Imran Abdulla's Adhaalat Party.
