President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Sunday that he is seeking re-election after fulfilling 90% of the pledges he made in the 2018 presidential election.

As the first destination of President Solih's presidential campaign, he stopped at Sh. Komandoo and addressed the supporters gathered at the harbour. He said that the five years coming to a close had brought him many challenges.

The president said that despite "repeated pressures from some parties to achieve their own desires", he had “prioritised the country and your lives”. He said he would find solutions to any difficulties that may come, and assured he has team capable of doing so.

"If a promise is made, we will fulfil it. There are difficulties, but we know how to find solutions. My team is capable of finding solutions," he said.

"We have fulfilled 90% of the pledges we made to you. You can see that in this island”.

Referring to his campaign slogan 'Ufaaveri, Amaan Raajje’ which means a ‘Joyful and peaceful Maldives', he said:

  • For the past five years, he has worked to provide a peaceful, secure and happy life for every Maldivian

  • Whether it is a small island or a big island, development is being carried out in every island

  • They did so because no citizen can enjoy a peaceful life without fulfilling their basic needs

Then the president recalled the five years of “injustices” of former President Abdulla Yameen. He also noted how projects had stopped due to change of governments. If the people did not wish to see that happening again, they should vote for him in the September 9 presidential election, he said.

"Exactly 60 days from now, your decision will be on whether Maldives will go backwards or continue in this endeavour. No one wants to go back to the violence and terror of the previous five years," he said.

According to the president, a peaceful country cannot be achieved by words alone. Instead, it is a practical matter requiring hard work, he said, adding that he has worked towards that path for the past five years.
