Senior leaders of the opposition coalition and senate members entered the Prosecutor General's (PG) office on Thursday, and threatened lawyers and addressed them using abusive language regarding the trial of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Senior opposition leaders and senate members visited the PG office to meet with PG Hussein Shameem, accusing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of interfering in Yameen's trial.

A video of the opposition leadership in the PG office is now circulating on social media. As the video shows:

  • PPM senator Amaany Mohammed threatens two prosecutor's office lawyers

  • The two lawyers are representing the state in the Yameen's tria;

Amaany, who is in charge of the health ministry in the PPM's interim committee, described the two lawyers as "thieves". She also spoke very obscenely.

Amaany made the remarks, while other senators present encouraged her.

Some people are also criticising the PPM on social media.

The party has not yet commented on the matter.

The video also shows another opposition member fallen on the floor of the PG's office. However, it is not known why.

After appearing at the prosecutor's office, the PPM-PNC leadership told reporters that they had been to the PG to meet with Shameem, but failed to meet any top officials as Shameem was on leave.

The prosecution on Wednesday had decided to withdraw the charges against Yameen's co-accused Ahmed Krik Riza. Opposition coalition's interim leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla alleged that the prosecutor's decision was taken on the orders of President Solih.

"These people are saying that the person who bribed [Yameen] was Ahmed Krik Riza. So, the prosecutor's office has been ordered by the president to withdraw the case of the person who allegedly gave the bribe. We came to clarify what is being done, what is the argument, how much justice is coming our way,” he said.
