Nearly 13 years after the construction began at H. Forwind near Henveiru stadium, the new police building was completed and officially opened on Sunday.

The building was inaugurated on Police Memorial Day, which has been celebrated since 2013.

The building was named Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building. The facility was inaugurated by home minister Imran Abdulla and Commissioner of Police Mohammed Hameed.

The ceremony was attended by the mother, father, wife and son of the late Sergeant Adam Haleem as well as other family members.

At the ceremony, Imran said that the service provided by the police to the people can be properly provided by increasing the resources provided to the police and facilitating their work.

The goal is to provide the police with resources that are commensurate with the results that the people expect from the police, he said.

Hameed said the new building will enhance police investigative work. The space constraints in investigations will now be greatly alleviated, he said.

Apart from the investigative work, he pointed out that the residents of Henveiru area would be able to avail police services with the establishment of a new police station, as well as easily monitoring maintenance of bridges and highways.

In Hameed’s speech:

  • He thanked the family of Adam Haleem for participating in the ceremony

  • Police Memorial Day is dedicated to the courage and bravery of Adam Haleem and his loyalty to duty as a lesson and example for the police

  • Other police officers are proud of the sacrifice of the martyrs

  • He recalled the martyrs of the police force and offered his condolences to their families

  • Remembering that every such new facility for police work is an out-of-pocket expense of the people, he said, the police should always remember that their responsibility is to eliminate crime and the fear of crime through the rule of law

In his speech, the commissioner stressed that investigative work is very important among the roles played by the police and special importance is being given to further develop and strengthen the investigative skills.

The 10-storey building includes interrogation rooms, a mess hall, a conference room and a multipurpose hall. The Criminal Investigations Command's Economic Crime Department, Serious and Organised Crime Department, and Drug Enforcement have been relocated to the new building.

In addition, the Interpol National Central Bureau and Henveiru Police will also be operating there.

Adam Haleem died in July 2012 after being stabbed while trying to detain a man, and was found on the street in K. Kaashidhoo.

The High Court upheld the Criminal Court's death sentence against Mohamed Samah who stabbed Haleem. The Supreme Court is currently in the process of deciding on the verdict.
