Main opposition PPM-PNC presidential candidate Abdulla Yameen on Sunday chose former vice president Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed as his running mate/

With just a week to go for filing nominations for the September 9 elections, the running mate's rivalry has intensified across all parties. Even within the main opposition party, various people have been vying for the post.

While a trusted source of PPM-PNC confirmed to Atoll Times that Yameen had appointed Jameel as his running mate, PPM-PNC spokesperson Heena Waleed, in a message to the media, confirmed Jameel's appointment.

Yameen-Jameel:

  • Yameen came to power in 2013 with Jameel has his running mate

  • Jameel served as Yameen's vice president until 2015

  • Jameel's no-confidence motion was passed by the parliament and he was sacked from the post; Jameel and his close aides alleged that it was a plot by the then tourism minister and later vice-president Ahmed Adeeb

  • Later, Jameel, who was in self-imposed exile in Britain, worked with the then opposition to change Yameen's government

  • Jameel, who was part of the Jumhooree Party (JP) in the ruling coalition, later switched sides back to PPM and is now working against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih

Nominations for the September 9 presidential election are being accepted from 9am Sunday to 2pm on August 7 from the election headquarters at Dharubaaruge.

The opposition PPM-PNC has handed over their presidential ticket to Yameen.

  • Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in jail on December 25 for money laundering and accepting a bribe over the leasing of V. Aarah for tourism as part of the MMPRC corruption scandal

  • The verdict has been appealed in the High Court but the appeal hearings have stalled as several judges are on leave
