President announces national campaign to restore culture of respect

President Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to launch a national campaign to restore mutual respect among citizens across the Maldives.
The President made the announcement during his ongoing visit to Alif Dhaal Atoll, speaking at a rally held in Mahibadhoo on Tuesday evening.
During his address, President Muizzu said that while the government continues to implement physical development projects, equal attention must be given to developing social values and relationships within the community. He noted that social progress involves improving behaviour and strengthening mutual respect among citizens.
“The respect we have for each other, the close relationships we should maintain, are values once held with pride in the Maldives,” the President said. “However, over the years, particularly during a period of political change, these values have weakened.”
Although he did not specify a particular period, President Muizzu appeared to refer to the political shifts that followed the introduction of multi-party democracy in the Maldives.
“I want to bring back the culture of respect that existed before. I believe every citizen truly wishes to show respect and kindness,” he said.
President Muizzu announced that the government will soon begin a national campaign of respect, aimed at rebuilding this culture. He called on all citizens, institutions, political parties, and organisations to take part in the initiative.
“The success of this campaign depends on the participation of everyone. We must revive respect across all areas of life — for neighbours, parents, elders, teachers, and within society at large,” the President said.
The government has not yet detailed the specific activities or measures that will be undertaken as part of the national campaign.
