Family Protection Authority (FPA) on Monday announced that it will start providing legal assistance to vulnerable victims of domestic violence from Tuesday.

FPA tweeted that the assistance of a lawyer can be requested:

  • By filling out a form through the FPA website

  • Forms are also available at the counters of the office

According to the FPA, the provision of legal assistance will strengthen the system to work against domestic violence and become an additional force to prevent domestic violence.

The FPA was established in 2012 under Article 52 of the Domestic Violence Prevention Act. The main responsibilities of the agency include:

  • Preventing and raising awareness about domestic violence

  • Provide services to victims of domestic violence

  • Ensure that relevant institutions such as police and health service providers can work together

  • To enhance the efforts of various bodies in Maldives to protect people from domestic violence, to bring them under a national policy and to work at the forefront at the national level

  • Establish temporary shelters for victims of domestic violence and provide sustainable services there

  • Determine the standards and procedures to be introduced to respond to an act of domestic violence in all areas and take necessary measures
