Jumhooree Party (JP) leader and presidential candidate Gasim Ibrahim on Sunday appointed party deputy leader Ameen Ibrahim as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election.

Gasim announced the appointment of Ameen, who has been serving as his campaign manager, at a press conference Sunday afternoon.

Ameen has been a close aide of Gasim for years. He returned to the Maldives last year after living in exile in the UK since his arrest from the May Day protest in 2015.

Gasim is set to file his candidacy on Monday.

Nominations for the September 9 presidential election will close at 2pm on Monday.
