Police on Sunday announced that they are searching for a man who threatened a police officer, but was released from custody by the Criminal Court after his arrest was deemed unlawful.
On 18 September, a man believed to belong to a gang operating in Male was arrested on robbery charges. Same day, another member of his gang had stormed into the Maafannu Police Station and made death threats to a police constable for arresting him.

Mohamed Azhan Ismail, 31, was arrested on 18 September for threatening the policeman
-
He was released by the Criminal Court when he was presented for remand, on grounds that the arrest was made without proper legal authority
-
Criminal Court Chief Judge Ahmed Shakeel ordered the man’s release based on the fact that he was arrested without a court warrant and outside the crime scene
Azhan's whereabouts have been made public on the police website on Sunday and they have made a public appeal to find him.
Police said that Azhan was being sought in connection with a serious and organised crime department investigation when he had entered the Maafannu Police Station and threatened a police officer.
To report to the police about his whereabouts, police have requested to contact their Serious and Organised Crime Department at 9911099.
In a tweet on the day his arrest was made, police commissioner Mohamed Hameed warned that action will be taken against such perpetrators.
"We will take action against groups that commit these crimes; violations of social norms and standards, and creating fear in the hearts of the people," Hameed had said.
