Parliament was adjourned on Monday after 11 of the 15 lawmakers who joined The Democrats, including Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, failed to inform the parliament secretariat for registration with the party.

The third parliamentary term of the year began on Monday after a two-month-long recess. The speaker shared with the MPs the change in the composition of the parties in the parliament.

Nasheed said only three MPs have so far informed the parliament secretariat that they have joined the party he led, The Democrats:

  • Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim

  • Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy

  • Madaveli MP Hussain Firushan

Nasheed said the parliament will consider that only three members are representing the Democrats until the secretariat receives a letter from other members who have joined the Democrats.

Proportion of MPs representing parties in parliament:

  • MDP: 54 members

  • PPM: 5 members

  • PNC: 3 members

  • Democrats: 3 members

  • MNP: 3 members

  • JP: 2 members

  • MDA: 2 members

  • Independent: 15 members

With the change in the proportion of parties represented, the time given to the parties to debate issues and the composition of the committees will also change, Nasheed said.

While Nasheed said the composition of the committees will change, the last time the composition of the committees was changed was at an extraordinary sitting held last month. However, the change was made before The Democrats was registered as a party.

"I would like to give The Democrats the opportunity to send the letters to the parliament secretariat if other members have joined your party within the hours of today. I believe that doing so will speed up the process of forming the people's standing committees," he said.

Nasheed said the no-confidence motion against him and the no-confidence motion against deputy speaker Eva Abdulla would be debated once the committees are formed.
