Independent presidential candidate Umar Naseer said on Monday that he has received death threats from some people, and that he has reported it to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
Umar announced it in a post on his Facebook page on Sunday. The post also included screenshots of some of the death threats issued him.
"This has been brought to the attention of the MNDF as various death threats are being received," Umar said.
Every candidate contesting the presidential election must be provided security by the MNDF from the moment the Elections Commission accepts the candidacy until the end of the election. The MNDF is providing security to all eight candidates this year.
Atoll Times's inquiry on whether the MNDF has beefed up Umar's security or taken any other measures in connection with the death threats has not yet been answered.
Police are also investigating a case in which a man attacked Umar with an iron rod during a campaign event held on August 19.
Umar had said:
-
A suspected drug dealer threw an iron object while he was conducting a pickup tour in the city to campaign for the presidential election
-
The iron hit him in the face, he said
The Elections Commission has called for an investigation into the case to be completed as soon as possible and those responsible to be brought to justice. However, no arrests have been made in the case so far. An update on the investigation was not immediately available.
