Several Telegram accounts, including those belonging to senior government officials and business figures, were compromised on Wednesday.
Among those affected was Jumhooree Party leader and businessman Gasim Ibrahim. Messages were sent from his account after it was accessed by unauthorised individuals. The account has since been recovered.
Other officials and businesspeople were also targeted, according to available reports. The method of compromise is believed to involve malicious links sent from unknown numbers.
The Maldives Police Service's Anti-Scam Centre issued a notice on Facebook advising the public to adjust their Telegram settings to minimise exposure to similar threats. The guidance includes the following steps:
