The signing of the final register of eligible voters for the upcoming local council elections resumed on Thursday after being suspended due to a fire.
The process was halted on Wednesday night following a fire at the Prime Godown located at M. Karige in Maafannu. The incident led to the evacuation of the nearby Elections Commission (EC) preparation centre.
All equipment from the polling station has since been transferred to the Social Centre.
The Elections Commission said the signing process is now being carried out at the Social Centre by candidates and representatives of political parties to ensure continuity of the election process.
EC Chairperson Mohamed Zahid said on Wednesday night that all election-related work will continue at the Social Centre until the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) grants permission to re-enter the original premises.
He also said that all documents and equipment have been safely removed and that the fire will not affect next month’s elections.
The local council elections are scheduled for the 4th of next month.
A referendum on whether to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day will also be held on the same date.
