NDMA registers 454 people at evacuation centre after warehouse fire
The warehouse is used by Prime Fertilisers to store chemicals and fertilisers.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said 454 people were registered at an evacuation centre following a fire at a warehouse in Maafannu on Wednesday night.
The fire broke out at the Prime Godown located at M. Kairge on Fulooniya Magu. The warehouse is used by Prime Fertilisers to store chemicals and fertilisers.
NDMA established an evacuation centre at the Social Centre.
As of 2:30am on Thursday, 454 people from 15 households had been registered at the centre.
According to NDMA, those registered included 69 women and 385 men. Among them were 203 foreign workers.
The authority said temporary shelter had been arranged for 77 people from 10 households who required assistance.
A total of 280 foreign workers were taken in by their employers, while the Maldivian Red Crescent provided assistance to 20 individuals.
NDMA said some families had moved to stay with relatives.
The authority identified 15 houses that were evacuated due to the incident.
Seven people received treatment for injuries, NDMA said, adding that all are in stable condition.
