Police launch investigation into Maafannu warehouse fire

The warehouse contained fertilisers, pesticides, agricultural equipment and a generator.

Police have launched an investigation into the fire that broke out at a warehouse operated by Prime Fertiliser Maldives Pvt Ltd in Maafannu on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred at a warehouse located at the junction of Izzuddin Magu and Fulooniya Magu.

Police said the fire was reported at 9:57pm. The warehouse contained fertilisers, pesticides, agricultural equipment and a generator.

According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the fire was brought under control at 10:49pm and was fully extinguished at 4:58am on Thursday.

Police said the scene is being examined as part of the investigation.

“Police have launched a special investigation to determine the cause of the incident,” police said in a statement.

Authorities said one firefighter was injured and was taken to hospital.

The fire caused damage to the warehouse and its contents.

Police said 13 motorcycles, a pickup truck and a company van in the area were also damaged.

As a precaution, 77 people from the surrounding area were provided temporary shelter with assistance from relevant authorities.
