The Democrats has filed a complaint with the Elections Commission (EC) against a terrorist threat issued to them on social media.
At a press conference held at the party's office in Maizandhoshuge on Wednesday, the Democrats' election spokesperson Imthiyaz Fahumy confirmed that the matter has been referred to the EC.
The MP for Maafannu North constituency said that a terror attack threat had been posted on social media against party, which said “a second bomb attack will come soon”.
"So, we should not take this lightly. We wish to stress that terrorism cases are horrifying cases," he said.
Imthiyaz said the case was filed with the EC as an election case:
-
To be investigated as a serious concern
-
To provide the party with the necessary safety and security
Imthiyaz highlighted the impunity in terrorism related cases. The May 6, 2021 bomb attack against the party’s founder, parliament speaker Mohammed Nasheed, is proof of that, he said.
Imthiyaz said all relevant state institutions should take such threats seriously and investigate the matter immediately.
“We must ensure safety and security for our presidential candidate, running mate and this party,” Imthiyaz said.
