Retirement age raised to 70; voluntary at 65

The President made the announcement after the government increased the basic pension for people over the age of 65 to MVR 7,000 per month.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Thursday that the mandatory retirement age will be changed from 65 years to 70 years, and that people can voluntarily retire at 65.

The president made the announcement while addressing a rally at the MDP's Huvadhoo camp on Maaveyo Magu, campaigning for the second round of the presidential election on 30th of this month. 

“We will change the retirement age from 65 to 70 and everyone who retires from the age of 65 will get MVR 7,000 instead of MVR 5,000,” he said.

The President made the announcement when the government increased the basic pension for people over the age of 65 to MVR 7,000 per month.
