President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizz has urged President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to immediately transfer former PPM leader, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is serving a prison term for bribery and money laundering, to his home immediately.

Muizz was speaking at his first press conference as president-elect in H. Meeruma/Male after the provisional results of the second round of the presidential election confirmed his victory.

"I would like to ask the President to transfer our President, President Abdulla Yameen, home," was Muizz's first request after securing power.

"The president can legally move him home. I think it is in the best interest of this country today to do so”.

Muizz's remarks came as his supporters gathered outside the PPM office on Saturday evening and fervidly for Yameen's immediate release.

The rally was attended by Yameen’s senior lawyer, Dr Mohmmed Jameel Ahmed, who also called on the Prosecutor General to transfer Yameen home unconditionally within the next 24 hours and withdraw the charges against him.

"The people's voice is very clear from the election results. The results show that the charges and sentences against President Yameen are not good," Jameel said.

Celebrations are prohibited by law until 6am on Sunday. Therefore, he will meet the people at the Artificial Beach on Sunday evening to celebrate his victory, Muizz said.

He said this is a very important time and urged his supporters not to incite anything that could disrupt the peace of the country. Muizz thanked all the people who voted for him and asked them to maintain good manners and not allow anyone to disrupt the peace.

In the second round of the elections held between opposition candidate Muizz and second-placed President Solih, Muizz defeated Solih with 53.8% or 126,252 votes from 585 ballot boxes counted.

According to the results to that point:

  • President Solih - 108,432 votes; 46.2% of the vote

  • Muizz- 126,252 votes; That's 53.8% of the vote
