With the MDP's Parliamentary Group (PG) resuming the process of removing Speaker Mohamed Nasheed from his post, his party The Democrats on Saturday evening accused the incumbent government of corruption and called for an investigation into such cases.

After the first round of the presidential election, the MDP withdrew its no-confidence motion against Nasheed, but has since resumed the process of filing the motion again.

An MDP PG meeting is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

The Democrats’ lawmakers and some of the party's leaders lashed out at the government on Saturday.

Overall, they all accused the government of corruption.

"One of the things the Democrats have always advocated is that theft and corruption cases should be investigated credibly. Theft and corruption cases of President [Ibrahim Mohamed] Solih and the MDP government should be investigated," the Democrats' interim chairman, Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef posted on X.

Hassan Latheef's X post was reposted by other Democrats who accused the government of theft.

"It wouldn't be so wise to hasten in defeat. We Democrats are hastening now to ask the relevant authorities to investigate the corruption cases of the outgoing government," said Ali Azim, a member of the Democrats' interim council.

Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb, who contested the presidential election on behalf of The Democrats, said that theft and corruption allegedly committed by President Solih and MDP government should be investigated. He added that there can be "no respite" without taking action on it.

Deputy-Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla said one of the main reasons for their departure from the MDP was the corruption of the government and the president's "network of bribery and fraud". The network includes MPs, corporate executives and other close associates, she alleged.

“This network must be investigated and brought to justice,” Eva said.

Nasheed's no-confidence motion was first moved in early June. After the first round of the presidential election on September 9, Nasheed tried to proceed with the motion despite a deadlock on reconstituting the standing committees. However, the petition, which was signed by 54 MPs, was later withdrawn by the MDP.
