Faih released, rearrested on murder charges

He was released because "indefinite detention does not appear to be fair under these circumstances," the order said.

Ibrahim Faih Nizam, who was arrested in connection with a series of fights in the city earlier this year, was released and then re-arrested on Monday following murder charges among the street violence.

Police first announced the wanted listing of Faih, aged 26, Rahdhebaige/Addu Maradhoo-Feydhoo, on February 15 in connection with a series of fights in Male.

  • A month later, after being on the run, Faih turned himself in and was arrested

  • Following his arrest, the court ordered his detention pending trial; However, he was later released by the court (release date unknown).

  • While in custody last April, he was charged with three counts of assault

  • Faih was re-arrested on charges of the murder of Mohammed Ahmed Didi, 30, who was attacked inside a shop in Maafannu ward during the series of fights, in Male. He died on February 27 while undergoing treatment in hospital

Faih was re-arrested and produced before the Criminal Court on Tuesday for a decision on his remand. However, Judge Ali Nadeem ordered him to remain in custody for 45 days.

Faih's court orders and the information police shared with Atoll Times on Tuesday says:

  • He was re-arrested on Monday after the court released him

  • Faih is believed to have been involved in the murder of Mohammed Ahmed Didi

  • CCTV footage, intelligence report and DNA analysis report support the allegation

According to the court order, he was not held until the closure of the trial as requested by the police as the investigation in the case was more than eight months long and there was still a possibility that the investigation would continue to be prolonged.

He was released because "indefinite detention does not appear to be fair under these circumstances," the order said.

Faih was charged with three counts in April. it is:

    Charged with assault with a dangerous weapon

    Battery

  • 3-

    Intentionally obstructing the work of a law enforcement officer

After more than a month on the run, Faih turned himself in to police, who arrested five suspects at the time for allegedly hiding him. Two of them were charged at the time.
