The new parliament speaker, Hithadhoo North MP Mohammed Aslam, has decided to formulate a code of conduct for members of the parliament.
Aslam said that although the parliament is a place where many political parties are represented, the parliament should not only do political work. Therefore, the parliamentary order should not be lost in order to continue the work of the parliament, he said. So he is considering taking steps to keep the parliamentary system intact.
Aslam relayed the measures he intends to take to maintain the dignity and honour of the parliament and to ensure the continuity of the Parliament:
-
Formulate and implement a code of conduct for members of parliament as per Article 88(a) of the constitution
-
Previous parliaments have tried to make a similar rule but it has not been done this term
-
In addition, administrative staff have been asked to take measures to ensure the safety and security of ministers and others visiting parliament
"This parliament is doing important work in making laws and holding the government accountable. It is the responsibility of every member of parliament like the speaker to maintain the dignity of the parliament," Aslam said.
Finance minister Ibrahim Ameer appeared to present the supplementary budget and next year's budget in parliament on Tuesday. The Democrats had protested on the floor and hindered the minister’s speech. MP’s had surrounded the minister's stand and tried to obstruct him while the statement was being heard.
